    Metal detectors

    Hi all,

'am wondering if metal detectors like the Wizard Detectors 25506 Lumber Wizard III Metal Detector (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=228013 ) are useful in detecting nails/staples in solid wood recycled from old furniture.

Wondering if it can be used to detect embedded metal and protect blades in CMS, jointer, planer, TS etc.

Searched the forum, but found only dated info.

    Thanks,
    /venkat

    Check this month's ShopNotes vol 15 /issue 87..
3 woodworking oriented metal detectors are covered in the writeup..
Lumber WizardIII ($100), Wall Wizard ($20) and Little Wizard ($20) ..
I have the little Wizard -- it works well for me.

I also have the Little Wizard. It works well for me. Most recently, it located an imbedded nail in a piece of recycled red oak that I couldn't see from the surface. I'm really glad I had it around or my planer blades would have been screwed up.

I've got the Lumber Wizard and although I don't often need it, when I do it's really good at finding every little scrap of metal.

All the wizard products are very sensitive and can find the very smallest items like staples.

The difference is the swath they cut - the little wizrd will scan a few inches wide the Lumber wizrard will scan whole baords at a time.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

The larger unit will also detect to a depth four times greater than the smaller unit (source - manufacturer's specifications).
