Grizzley - to buy or not to buy...

I was wondering what the general concensus was on Grizzly equipment. I was looking at their 14 inch bandsaw and from their website, the pictures show what appears to be a well made product. Of course, the Woodcraft folks, very helpful by the way, poo-pooed the idea because of presumed service issues meaning one would have to send it back to the factory for warranty work which would be expensive. Has anyone had any trouble with their Grizzly machines and how was it handled? They say their products are all ISO 9001 certified which should say something about their quality. Comments?

I'm not so sure all their products are ISO certified. In their catalog only some of the items are marked as being made in an ISO certifed factory. But the catalog I have is a year old, maybe all items are now ISO certified.I believe the certification means better quality control in the manufacturing process.

If you are talking about the Grizz 555 bandsaw - I think you will find that most owners (self included) are very happy with this saw. In fact - it's extremely highly thought well of. . .

yep. that's the one. with the fence included, it's seems to be a great deal. Don't need the miter gauge. Just purchased an Incra 1000SE yesterday.

ISO 9001 is a reasonably good indicator of quality.. but no guarantee it's better - or even as good as one that isn't 9001 certified. The main problem that it is a measure of adherence to procedures and standard practices (ie a measure of repeatability). Anyone can in theory repeatedly make a really bad piece of equipment, by following the wrong 'standard practices'.

Go for it, Howard. Order the riser kit with it. Much easier to install it out of the box rather than tearing the saw down later to add it.

Then give the folks at Suffolk a call and get some blades on the way.

Yes, do it. Great bandsaw. Have done much resawing of hardwoods (Oak, Walnut, and Cherry) with the "Ultimate" bandsaw. Get the riser kit, and the Timberwolf blades. The folks at Timberwolf are happy to answer questions about the blade requirements you may have. You will notice a difference with the Timberwolf blades.

A properly tuned Grizzly G0555 with the riser kit and Timberwolf blades is the best bang for the buck in the bandsaw world. Haven't heard of anyone needing service on theirs (or mine.)

For a more personal testimony: if I wasn't already married, I'd move to a state that would allow me to have legal relations with my G0555.

Did you purchase the 1000SE for your table saw? If so, once you have completed the set up of the miter gauge, it would be pretty impressive if it happened to fit well into your bandsaw. Not saying it will not fit, just that it will likely be rather tight fit or a bit sloppy. You can always give it a shot.
