    Hitachi B16RM DP - Assembly

    Two issues regarding the DP:

1.) I can't get the table to lock using the lock handle. The table turns freely even after the handle is tighten all the way. The problem is the gap on the table support; can't get it to clamp tightly around the table.

I wrapped a layer of Teflon tape to the table column to prevent it from turning but I am no sure if this will hold permanently. I'm wondering if the table support is defective and how to correct it (Lowes no longer carries this DP)?

2.) Am I suppose to tighten the column collar around the rack? I like the idea of being able to swing the table left/right for the purpose of storage in a small garage.

My table locks fine. I assume you're talking about the lock under the table that allows it to swivel. Make sure there is no chaff/metal cuttings in the gap, make sure you have installed the lock lever from the correct side!

Yes, you should be able to tighten the raise/lower mechanism around the rack. When the rack lock is loose to be able to raise and lower the table, the table will also swing 360 degrees around the column if set right. I had to loosen and level the ring that holds the top of the rack to allow the rack to swivel freely; it was tilted from the factory.

Odd thing, I was cruising thru a Sears Hardware Store here and saw a drill press. It looked very familiar and lo and behold it was the Hitachi in craftsman disguise. same 15", 12-speed. Even the speed chart and pulley configuration decal in the lid was the same. The two differences besides badging was that the Laser was Sear's laser and there was a support under the table that my Hitachi has the bosses for but the support was not included. The model was 22925 and the price was $289.

It seems that I did insert the lock lever on the worng side. I'm surprised that it made a difference but the table locks fine now. Thanks.

One side is threaded and the other is not.
If you insert it from the non-threaded side it will pull the two halves together trapping the table.
If you insert it from the threaded side the you will simply tighten the
lever in the one side and not pull the other side in at all, allowing the table to swivel freely.

A support guy for Hitachi, in a round-about way, told me that the Sears model drill press was very, very, very, very similar to the Hitachi. So I took it as Hitachi makes that model for Sears. That also means we could probably use the attachments Sears has for their DP and use it on the Hitachi.
