Drill Press Spindle Pulley Removal

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and hope maybe someone could give me some guidance here. Over the weekend I purchased a Clarke Drill Press (BT1029) from the local TSC. I got a pretty good deal as the belt guard was damaged.

I need to remove the spindle pulley to repair the damaged housing. So far I;

1. Removed belts and intermediate pulley (just lifts out)
2. Removed LEFTHAND threaded Jam nut on spindle pulley

at this point I am unsure about the assembly. I tried the following;

pull the pulley off by hand tapping with mallet to break free
gently used slide hammer to pull the pulley off
"un-screw" the pulley from the shaft
placed a gear puller on pulley with moderate pressure

This is where I stopped;

lack of knowledge + my luck + Murphy's law = catastrophic failure due to stupidity.

Any Ideas?

Try soaking said assembly between the shaft and the pulley with a very fine lubricant designed to help break stuck parts apart, then tap gently downwards to get pulley moving on shaft. Look for pulley key and drive that out with a punch.

If you can see the shaft in the center, HF and autosupply stores sell pulley pullers, they have three arms that hook under the edges of the pulley around the circumference and a jack screw that will push on the shaft to lift the pulley off.

The lubricant is a good idea. I did find a parts list on the Clarke site, (same as HF partlist coincidently), there is no key in the assembly. I can not see a keyway in the pulley either. Hmmmmm

I did try a gear puller. I had more pressure on the assembly than I was comfortable with. I also struck the jack screw on the gear puller sharply with a hammer as this often will break the two parts loose. The unit I used was more like this;

If I were positive this was a press fit, I could use my bearing wedge to protect the pulley from damage and really put some pressure on the assembly.

Got an 800 number for Clarke : 800-227-9603

Called them and spoke to Jeff in parts, he emailed me my manual and transferred me to service department where I left a message for Michael. Michael returned my call within 5 min or so.

Michael confirmed that the spindle pulley to inner shaft is a taper fit. I can definately get this puppy apart now.

How is that Clarke drill press working out for you? They just opened a TSC local to me and while checking it out I noticed the Clarke tools and the Floor and Bench model drill presses ecspecially. I am not familiar with the brand, are they any good? Where are they made?
