    ISO input test

    I was just trying to respond to a message by inputting some ISO code, but the forum wouldn't let me--or at least not fully. I tried to illustrate superscript characters by inputting
    #178; (&#178
    #179; (&#179
    but while I was able to input the ampersand code (&#178), the forum displays the superscripts in preview mode, but keeps changing them back to plain #178 and #179 in the actual message, even if I go back and edit the message. Anybody know why this happens?

    Don't have an answer but I can enter the ISO ANSI characters by holding the ALT-key and typing on the keyboard the four-digit decimal value.

    for exampl I typed ALT-0176 and then ALT-0178 to get the following two chars (degree and superscript 2):
    °² How's that?
    Appears OK in the edit box, the preview and the actual message.

      Does it work well for you in other programs?

        Thanks, Loring. I wonder if this has something to do with my using a Japanese keyboard and OS? Lessee:

        Yep, holding down ALT doesn't seem to work like it does for you. Looks like that has something to do with it.

          Lefty, if the question is for me, yes, it works in most windows apps like Word.
          Won't work in any DOS apps.

          Norm, I would expect it to work in most Windows systems. Basically its their way of getting the 256 possible characters without having too many keys, or getting those special characters with a keyboard that does not support those characters.

          I found an on-line HTML doc with all the ISO ANSI chart of characters... If i remember I'll post the link here when i get home.
          I don't know where in the MS docs it says you can do this... I have found it by reading and searching on the net.

          Incidentally, the numbers you type must be with the numeric keypad AND the Numlock must be on. I tried it once with the Numlock off and it completely changed my browser window to some other URL!

            Another way you could have those symbols show up is to use the character map. Found at Start -> Programs -> Accesories -> System Tools -> Character Map (in 2000) select the character, copy and paste. ® ¶ #936;

              Been there, done that. I turned the number lock on the numeric keyboard and it still didn't work. I'm at a different keyboard now, lessee again:
              ²³#12288;
              Okay, I now find that using the front-end Japanese language processor lets me enter the characters!
              ²³²³º¹¤£¢¥§
              Try once more:
              ²²³²³º¹ ¼ ½ ¾ ¿
              By George, I think she's got it!
