    Message base - unread messages

    Sam,

In the interest of making this forum user friendly as the message base gets bigger and BIGGER,

I note that the purple folder are supposed to hold unread messages and the yellow folders messages that have not been added to since I last read them.

But I see that there are many times purple folders that have messages I know I've read all of them before. Sometimes I can even tell by the dates of the last post displayed. Yet - purple. Anyone else noticed this or am i getting senile (too much sawdust on the brain)?

Also, it would be nice, mind you I'm not complaining, to be able to press a button and "mark all messages read", so that messages I've purposely ignored won't be purple and only those appearing since I last pressed the button will be purple so I don't have to sort thru them again. Many forums have this feature... maybe its an option you have to turn on?

I do have my accept cookies on...

I am not too thrilled with the way threads are displayed myself. But, as far as I can tell, there is no way to change the way it behaves. Most of the forum softwares I've looked at (PHPBB, Snitz, UBB Classic) all use this "non-nested" format. I guess we've all gotten so used to the DC Scripts based forums that Ryobi and Woodworking.com use that it's hard to change.

When you visit the site, press "Active Topics" above. After reading the topics there is a yellow/purple button in the upper left corner (next to the word Topic) that will mark all the messages as being read. When you visit next time, only the newly replied to topics will be purple.

I think what Loring is getting at, and what bugs me is that when you "go into" a topic that is marked as "new" there is no way of telling which messages in the topic are new. Obviously the bottom one is new, but how many above that?

I posted the same thing here.

Is the wood net forums the same software package? If so they seem to have the new messages feature. When you click on a thread it even jumps you stright to the new messages.

Woodnet.net uses UBB.Threads. It's a nice board, but costs $300.00. That's certainly not in my budget.
