Plunge drilling (jig) for Bench Dogs - Part II

    All the bits:

In order to prevent movement during drilling (and clamping), I glued 180 grit sandpaper on the stretchers, base and the “zero edge fence” (ZEF) – what other forum lets you dream up your own acronyms?

Drilling Reach from an edge (without ZEF) is 4-1/2” thru 13” – center to center. With ZEF I can drill right up to an edge.

This Pic shows it all together (including the ZEF) – set up to drill right on the edge of the bench. Not obvious, but the base has all 4 brass “clamps in place – still enough room for the quickgrips.

This next pic was taken especially for Mainemarc – he will tell you why.

Part III coming – Drilling the holes!

Rod, have you made the move to off-shore manufacture of your jig designs? I'm quite sure this wasn't actually made in your shop....there's no MDF used in the construction!

What? Hey Rod, Where is the indexing peg so that you can index this hole exactly the same distance from the last hole?

As I recall, I used a bit brace and a 3/4" (thats 19mm to you, Rod) auger bit to drill my bench dog holes. I had the workbench outside in my driveway, I sat cross legged on top of it and finished the job in what? Maybe 20 minutes.

Well, someone has to chart the other end of the A/R spectrum.

I get my inserts from woodhaven.com. Attached to a bolt and then hammered in. If you slightly countersink the pilot hole they seat very well.

                        Yes John. 1/8" MDF

They are there to stop the base from "swinging" as it's moved along the slots.

Okay, aside from the ungodly clean shop, Rod has mad camera skilz, too.
Probably been asked before - what make/model are you using? Even with a tripod mount and timer release, my pics come out lousy. But give the same camera to the youngest, and all is great.
