Totally depends on the bench design and what you do.
My old bench has a moving tail and I used an old Workmate guts to build it with.
Used it quite often with woodworking.
I have a Record 7" mounted on the face that I use most often though. It isn't placed to use bench dogs. The tail vise is. The tail vise is like a breadboard on the end of the bench. The whole thing moves into two rows of bench dogs.
I'll eventually use it rfor woodworking again, but right now it's mostly for metal work.
My current workbench has a large front vise only. When I want a tail - I use a surface mounted horisontal clamp. There was a design somewhere here at this site (I think by Tom Miller) of a home-made horisontal clamp.
