    One Vise

If you have just one vise, would you mount it as a face vise or a tail vise on your new bench?

Face mounted would probably be slightly more advantages and provide more stability.

Totally depends on the bench design and what you do.
My old bench has a moving tail and I used an old Workmate guts to build it with.
Used it quite often with woodworking.
I have a Record 7" mounted on the face that I use most often though. It isn't placed to use bench dogs. The tail vise is. The tail vise is like a breadboard on the end of the bench. The whole thing moves into two rows of bench dogs.
I'll eventually use it rfor woodworking again, but right now it's mostly for metal work.

I personally prefer a face vise. I guess it all comes down to personal preference...

My current workbench has a large front vise only. When I want a tail - I use a surface mounted horisontal clamp. There was a design somewhere here at this site (I think by Tom Miller) of a home-made horisontal clamp.

My only vise is a face vise.

When I redo my workbench, I'll put in a wagon vise and remount the face vise.

If I had to have just one it would be a leg vice on the front left leg. Preferably a Benchcrafted one: http://benchcrafted.com/GlideVise.html

While it would serve as my favored face vice it would also give me a lot more clamping power.

I'll use my Veritas wonder dog more often than I do my tail vice.

I'd go with a face vice.

                That Benchcrafted stuff is beautiful!
