I initially switched my AP-400 to felt bags and then I bought a cartridge filter from these guys:

For over 18 years, our 35-Series Filters have been built specifically as upgrade replacements for the balloon bags used on hobby and small shop dust

It is a bit better than a 1 micron and close to a HEPA filter if I remember right. I had to make a plywood doughnut to mount it to my DC but that was no big deal. This was the best deal I found for a really good filter. I also have a washable electrostatic furnace filter on a box fan that I use sometimes to reduce dust level. But with the cartridge filter on the DC I haven't used it much. The biggest opportunity I have at the moment is cleaning my shop. It has dust pretty much everywhere a lot of which if from my early DC use with 30 micron bags.
