    DBHost,

That woodshop class was long ago (1962). The teach believed that "projects should be products" and that's how he ran the advanced wood shop class. The first semester we visited a local furniture manufacturer and then designed, setup jigs and fixtures, and then "manufactured" over a hundred small desks. We sold them to parents, teachers, neighbers etc.

The second semester, we took a 2-stall garage plan, redesigned it, adding tot the dimension and then prefrabricated a small "house". In early June we erected it on the job site where a slab foundation had been poured. The land belonged to the district principle and the building became known in the community as the "Crow's Nest"... used exclusively by the Military Affiliated Radio Service (MARS). During the rest of the 60's and early 70's it was used by Ham Radio operators to pass health and welfare traffic from military service personnel in Vietnam, and elsewhere, to their families here in NY and PA.

You're right, I think we'd be hard pressed to find that type of "hands-on" experience at the high-school level these days.
