So, if I'm already heavily invested in the cheap, shop lights (4' fluorescents) can I improve them with the 6500*, daylight bulbs or am I stuck because of the ballast?

PS You might try an electrical supply house for those connectors, davebil.

As long as the ballast matches the type (T12 or T8) of bulb and the wattage, you're good to go.

In my shop, I installed el-cheapo plug-in shop lights from Wal-Mart that cost $7.92 each, and lamped them with 6500* bulbs that cost ~$8 pair. The new fixtures I bought are optimized for 34w T8s but will also handle 34w and 40w T12s. Four of the lights are older fixtures that will only accept T12s.

Thanks, Larry. That's a relief to hear. I'm usually 'learning' via ignorance, as in, "I never heard of ****. I wih I'd known that before I bought *****"! Especially on somethng as mudane as fluoresent lighting.
