New DIY Router Table – purpose built

The Old one “evolved” from a design from WOOD magazine (I think), about 12 years ago. Designed to fit my Ryobi R150 (¼” collet), it was before the advent of insert rings and before base plates were available in Oz. I quickly discovered that I needed to enclose it to control the dust. I also wanted to power it so the Shopvac and router switched together. The end result has served me well.

It normally has a 1/8” roundover bit installed, but also with straight bits for jig slots etc.

The biggest disadvantage was the hassle of changing bits – screwdriver removal of the router. As well, I wanted more table depth behind the bit for dados, and a wider table surface.

    ================================================== =====

Enter BT3Central.com – I was alerted to the availability of the new Triton MOF001 1400W ½” router (smaller brother of my TRA001 2400W)!

This new Table (23” x 27-1/2”), fits all my requirements.

    - Above table bit changes courtesy of Triton.
    - I plan to use it only with ¼” shank bits. I have no need for inserts, so the router is “permanently” attached to the table – no base “plate”.
    - Enlarged (for me) Table top: laminated MDF – 3/8” on 5/8”. A hole is cut in the 5/8” to fit the router (without the OEM 3/8” base plate) and the plunge spring removed. The bit hole was cut with my “largest” (planned) 45° bevel bit. 3 coats of clear acrylic (top and bottom), then 4 coats Johnson’s wax.
    - Great below-table DC courtesy of Triton.
    - Simple front cover for cleaning.

The “New” fence is split because I find it more useful. I say “new” but it was built for my larger table before I replaced it with a UHMW fence – nothing like recycling.

    OLD table:

New one, WIP - LOML seemed to think this was worthy of a pic

New one: Door is plywood, attached with "Amazing" magnets.

Looks good, Rod! Did you leave the dust shrouds on the router, or remove them? How's the dust collection generally?

No surprises Rod...it looks awesome! I was almost afraid to look for fear of feeling ashamed of mine after! You always do an amazing job.

          Looks great Rod.

Got a Q: Why do you never anticipate using 1/2" shank bits? I'm just the opposite. I rarely use 1/4", and try to avoid them.

Dust shrouds left on, DC is great. Cutting the slots I mentioned recently (no above table DC possible), that short link to the left side of the table works a treat

John - I use 1/2" shank bits in this. The new table will be mainly for the "small" roundover bits etc.

I will soon need to do something like this as I've just picked up a big triton from Jeff.

In the first pic, is the fence movable and if so how?

                          dust shroud

Rod, that is some quality shop furniture.

A question for RayintheUK. Ray, would it be better to leave the dust shroud on or take it off in this situation (table mounted, enclosed)?

1/4-20 Knobs - long studs into t-nuts underneath the table - slots cut in the fence base (not visible in the pic).

VERY old pic, VERY old fence

I would say leave it on (front off so you can see it all):
