    No new shop.......

....but that isn't a bad thing. After living in the house for a year now, LOML and I have decided the following:
1, No separate shop in the back yard
    2. A pool in the back yard
    3. A small shed in the back yard for the yard care stuff
    4. She can live with the car in the drive way
    5. I get the ENTIRE 20'x20' garage for the shop
    6. I get an electrican to come out and up grade the power
    and lighting
    7. I get to insulate the overhead & garage door
    8. I can spread out WITHOUT having to dismantle and
move a very nice layout to another shop

I think we have come up with a win-win situation!

So, have any of you ever insulated a garage door? I was thinking of glueing the blue foam panels to the back side.

Once I insulate the door & overhead, the A/C I have should keep the space compfortable to work in.

Yup. What I did with mine is use the 2'x2'x1" styrofoam foam panels I got from eBay. Use the Quicktight Powerlock glue because I was worried the Liquid Nail would melt the styrofoam. The bottom panel of the door I additionally put down 1/4" thick plywood as a "bumper", again with the Powerlock.

Also check the seal flap thing around the door on a really sunny day with the lights off. If you can see sunlight, then you're going to have air & bugs in and noise out.

As for the garage door, if you have windows in it (or in the garage walls), consider getting some solar film. This will help keep the heat gain to a minimum. Most garage ceilings are not insulated. Consider this also.

Lastly, although in most cases you might think to provide a return duct from your garage if you are hooking into your central A/C, DO NOT do it for a garage! This could introduce objectionable or toxic vapors into your house, as well as spread sawdust everywhere. Make sure also that the door from your garage into your house is very well weatherstripped, as the air forced into your garage from your A/C has to go somewhere. You would think this goes without saying, but my own neighbor did this last year, and darn near suffocated his family.

          Enjoy your new space!

                Question

The foam on the inside of the door sounds like the way to go. As to point #6, what did you upgrade to. I would love to get a subpanel put in but I would have to upgrade my main to 200 amp.

My GFs Aunt insulated their garage and use it as over flow during holiday gatherings. The used this stuff. It works very well. That is the plan on my garage door, when I insulated the outside wall before next winter.

Bill, no date yet. Once it's in, BIG POOL party and EVERYONE is invited!
Mike, no up grade yet. I know I want (2) 220v circuits, more lights, at least (6) 20amp circuits so whatever the electrican says I need to dupport that, that's what it will be.
Just4funsies, The Ac unit i have is a small portable. I'm not going to ie inthe house. Fumes aside, LOML would kill if a lot of dust starting coming in the house!

This will be a project done in stages. It should be a lot of fun and the results even more so. Got to tell you, after moving the shop once, I WAS NOT looking forward to doing that again!

Now that is what I call a win-win situation. A shop and a pool. You can't beat that.

you might contact the manufacture of your garage door. some companies make panels that attach right to your door. these would offer a nice clean apperance, and minimal fuss, allowing you to focus on more important "projects" like hanging light fixtures.

There is a glue made especially for this foam. Comes in tubes like caulk but it's about $4/ tube, if I recall correctily.

I would like to add that you should be working in a well ventilated area. Dust and vapors remain in the air a long time. Having it insulated and air conditioned might result in what I call "hazardous confinement".
