Incra Jig

Does anyone have any experience with this jig set up? I am in the process of using this exact Rockler router table top to make a wide table for my BT3 and with x-mas coming up I thought maybe if I sweet talked Mrs. Claus she might have one of our elves get it for me.

I looked at jig last night too,Grant (we have got the same e-mail!)and was also wondering if it was worth getting.

That setup looks like it requires more than just the jig. If you have to make all the other parts, you might as well make the whole jig.

I agree. Total package is $100. I would get this for $139 instead. Both still look like trouble for panel bits.

I agree with Jim on this. I think the Incra would be the best setup for the money. I see it as an attachment for the table and not to take the place of a regular fence though. You would just use which other was appropriate at the time.

I should add that I have the Incra Ultra upgraded with the Wonder fence. The set up is a really good fence but I have not mastered dovetails with it.

That's an inexpensive plastic version of the incra jig. Apparently an exclusive to Rockler.

At $60 just for the positioning mechanism, that's making wonder what I can possibly use it for...

Rip fence positioner, drill press table fence positioner, stop block positioner...

I'm thinking...

But I would agree with jim, If I were looking at the whole system the ultra light (12.5" vs 8" and metal vs plastic) for $139 vs $100, I'd get the ultra light.

I thought the jig looked pretty good in pictures, but it appears that even if you do go ahead and buy the combo package you will still have to make a mount for it. The email says combo only comes with fence, stop block, and right angle feature. $59 seems a decent price, but not sure how good the jig is without the rest of the stuff.

I purchased the "jig only" for $60 at Rockler. Yes, I need to make a fence (MDF should work fine) and a "mounting plate" and a right angle fixture and a stop block. but the "saw tooth jig is what I purchased it for. I have not used it, but it sure appears sturdy and useful enough. I think it is worth $59. Not sure the $139 Ultralite would really be that more useful. I mainly wanted it to align my fence when using "non" pilot bits(grooves, dados, rabbets, etc). I get really tired of making sure both sides of the fence is exactly the same distance from the bit. The projects I seem to be workin on lately require "long grooves, dados" so having the fence "askew" is a problem. I think it will solve that issue beautifully.

If you measure from the bit to the center of the fence you shouldn't have anything "askew". Thats the beauty of a router fence, nothing to square up except the verticle face of the fence and that is only for verticle cuts.

i have the gold anodized metal version.withthe cam clamp on back,,got it for $20 at a garage sale along witht he patterns and all,,its fun,i havent made any dovetail boxes yet but works great for when i core-box bore out my flute halves. ji just clamp it to the table and remove when done.

Looks to me like the main feature of the Incra jig is its use of dual 1/32" pitch racks, so that it automatically slips into place when you get it in the approximate position. You then lock it down so it stays there. I wonder if anyone has made their own version of this, perhaps using 4 all-thread rods or some other rack gears, 2 on top and two below, seated deeply enough in dadoes that only the outer threads protruded. One could make a slot or some other way of clamping and loosening to prevent or allow adjustment. Seems like this wouldn't be too difficult and would provide equivalent accuracy and repeatability (if there were a fine scale attached to bottom panel).

I bought the original Incra jig and fence about 10 years ago. I paid $29 for the jig. Don't remember what I paid for the fence and right angle jig. I also bought the video and the instruction book. Viewed the video several times and read the book at least twice. My initial impression is: if the tool is so complicated or unusual that viewing a video is required, then maybe, just maybe, there's a better tool out there.
The quality of all Incra products is excellent however.Today (12/31) is my 68th birthday so I guess I'm feeling a bit curmudgeonly.

I was thinking of getting the positioner (jig), without the fence and fixture. The reason is that the fence has no dust collection setup, it's low, and the bit hole is small. I don't see why I couldn't do better myself.
