I've not found that it matters. I don't find that they leak, if stood tip up, layed flat, or even left in the gun... at least not for something like window glaze, painter's putty, or other latex calk.

I do have problems with silicone though. That stuff seems to even leak out of the tube even if it's not opened. I've found the best thing is to buy only what you need, use it quickly, and then discard whats left.

I use Nozzle Caps that I get from Lee Valley. There have been times that I've used them and when I went back to finish off the tube, sometimes almost a year later, the caulk at the tip of the nozzle was still as solf as when the tube was first used.

+1 for duct tape. I've tried wire nuts, drywall screws, golf tees, etc. I always have duct tape around and it always works. (The nozzle caps from LV do look nice though, I just havent' ordered anything from them for a while.)

I leave it open, wait for the caulk in the tube to dry up, and then throw it away and buy a new one.

Seriously, I've yet to find a way to keep caulk consistently for more than a few months.
