Barrel nut for Bed rail question

    Drilling out (countersinking) for the head and plugging would leave less wood stock for holding strength. There would no longer be full thickness for that end of the fastener.

      probably not an issue when dealing with a 4x4 bed post. (which is why the stock fastener is too short).

        It would be an individual preference whether a capped bolt would be visibly more appealing than a wood plug.

          The long 4 3/4" bolts worked great..

          The posts are 2 3/4 sq so they gave me 2" into the rail..
          I put the barrel nuts 1.5" in from the ends..

          Works great.. nice and solid.

          The fun part was drilling the blind holes for the barrel bolts.. I was worried about going through but a piece of tape on the Forster as a depth gauge worked for me.
