A friend is making some little bandsaw boxes for his nieces and wants to use magnets to hold the lid in place. What have you found to work well for this task?
It depends on what he is doing. I have also had success with epoxy, including without a hole. 5 minute from HF works fine IMHO. But my preferred way is to buy the special base for the magnet and install it with a screw. Once you pop the magnet in, it is going nowhere. You would need to put the magnet on the box side to have depth enough and then a steel washer on the lid. I like Lee Valley for this stuff.
You can also get ring magnets that are drilled and countersunk to directly accept mounting screws. Haven't ordered from these folks yet, but lots of choices and apears to be pretty good pricing.
Another good look is to cover the hole with a thin veneer. The veneer wil help to hold the magnet in and make it look a lot better. I countersunk some magnets into the ends of some dowels for a knife display case. The magnet was in a fairly tight hole held in place with just some tightbond and then a thin piece of veneer was glued over it.
