I ran across this image of a puzzle that variations of it would be real easy to make from scraps. It's the general idea I found interesting. Might be a good one for kids.

Using the parts as shown you can make a rectangle; using a different arrangement including the little square piece you can make a different rectangle. The puzzler is supposed to be that (lets assume the little square is 1 square inch) is to assume that the rectangles are the same size then where did the extra square's space come from? In reality the clever choice of sizes and shapes ends up with two different area rectangles, one being a square inch more than the other. The cutout being a little sloppy allows the extra square inch to be spread among the joints.
Without being supplied the exact dimensions of the pieces or a lot of mental work, this puzzle would be hard to replicate.
