      Sounded like the plunge routing base for the dremel would do the trick...

      FWIW, after the holidays, start checking Craigslist if you live near a major city for used drill presses. I got mine for a measly $75.00

        Just as a update, I found out my dad has a dremel drill press stand so I borrowed it.

        I made a little fence and stuck a steel rule on top. I just moved the piece every 1/4" and drilled. It did the job fine but the bit kept burning the poplar regardless of the speed of the dremel.

        I'll keep my eye on CL after Xmas and see what comes up (assuming I have any money afterwards).
