Sources for small pieces of wood.

Where do you folks find small pieces of exotic woods to make boxes, bandsaw boxes, etc. The small planinig mill that I use has good prices and carries exotics but you have to buy the whole plank. What if I don't like working with purple heart? So, mooch, buck up and buy the plank or mail order it?

I was in the same boat as you before I moved to the Seattle area. I know Rockler sells wood by the piece and in small kits. I don't know how the prices are compared to local places but it may be worth a look for smaller stock.

I don't have a Woodcraft closer than an hour and a Rockler is 1.5 hrs. The first isn't bad if you're not sitting on a bum back.

Look for turning wood/turning blanks/bowl blanks.

A cabinet/millwork shop (if you have one nearby) will have cutoffs. Exotic pieces abound on Ebay, and many of those vendors have online stores.

I got a few bits and ends from [edit- sorry] Woodcraft, paid by the pound. They had a big box in front full of ebony, purpleheart, zebra wood, etc.

It depends on what sort of class they were hosting recently on what scraps they have on hand.

It wasn't as cheap as I recall in the past. I think I dropped $10 on 3 pieces approx 3" square, by 10" long or so. It was very dense wood, though. Osage Orange and ebony.
