Where would I find a 30g metal drum?

I am trying to think of businesses that would use/throw out 15 or 30 gallon size metal drums or even plastic or fiber for that matter. The only thing I would want to know is what was in them before bringing them home! Can anyone think of some sources to find these used? New ones are just way too expensive shipped. Thanks!

edit... i think for my size dust collector 50-720 a 15 gallon might be more appropriate anyway.

I work at a car dealership, and have gotten then there free before, check a hyundai/subaru or mb dealership, they get special engine/gear oil in 15-50 gallon drums.

My town has a company that cleans/recycles drums. Yours might have a similar outfit.

Try your local car wash. Mine gave me a 50g plastic drum. They get their soap, etc. in them.

We have a local recycling operation here too. They don't specialize in barrels but buy aluminum and other metals too. I picked up a couple plastic drums a couple years ago for trash cans at work. They were closed head and previously held grape jelly, I suppose for a local bakery. They still retain that sweet grape jelly smell.

I've heard that car washes get their soap in large drums.

Oil supply companies, service stations, car dealerships, implement dealerships all should have drums of various sizes. They might let you have one cheap. If you have a local bakery, they would probably have plastic drums from cooking oil, although they might not have a good size range.

Car Washes usually get their soaps and liquid wax stuff in 30 or 55 gallon drums.

Food processing plants such as mass bakeries get things like corn syrup in 55 gallon barrels.

I had to laugh about "service stations" though. I didn't think they existed any more...

I actually paid for my drum because of the local recyclers. They pay the places that might otherwise give away the drums... My drum was CONSIDERABLY less expensive than their online prices, but it wasn't free either...

I figured that part of it would be different. When I was in college, I got a 55 gallon plastic barrel from the local bakery to use to store drinking water on a mission trip. They gave it to us at no charge. I don't really know if they reused the barrels or not.

Thanks all for the input. I think I will try the car dealerships first.

Check your local county gardening sites. They list source for rain barrels.

Nope. It's up in Orlando near the airport.

db has a good one. Probably the most readily available. Around here there is an apple processing plant and they get apple concentrate and add it to the fresh (?). They have the blue plastic ones and occassionally they sell or give them away. I'm not sure what makes the difference. I got a steel, 35 or 40 gal, steel with a clamp on lid from an outfit that makes towing and tie-down chains to order - securement straps too but it's the chain that comes in the barrels and he is swamped with them (sorry 'bout that).
                            Blessings,
                            Chiz
