Fine WW had an article on using a router to do this. They made shaped side rails and attached the router to bars that rode on the rails. Sort of the same idea as using a router to mill a bench top except that instead of perfectly flat rails keeping the router flat, they used shaped rails to make the router go up and down. I may still have the article at home. If I find it I'll post the issue date. I think you use a shaped rail in the front and a higher, flatter rail in the back.

I read that article, too. Personally, I'd rather keep all my fingers. That procedure looked VERY dangerous to me...

You do have to be careful though, it's real tough to put wood back if you take off too much:-)
Another vote for the angle grinder, except I would suggest a flap wheel, a little less aggressive with the material removal than a regular wheel...

I have the lancelot, but I think he would be better off using the grinder-sandpaper method. The lancelot is a bit hard to control for this kind of project, IMHO. As mentioned here, 24 or even 36 grit would do it nicely.

Hey, if you're putting in for a keyboard, i'm putting in for a new pair of tighty whiteys. That was funny!

                JP,

Given all the choices offered here, I still like the idea or using a router to scoop out the chair seats. I couldn't find the Fine Woodworking issue I read it in but the article is on their web site. They have a free 14 day trial you can use to log in and get the article - Shaping Chair Seats with a Router.
