What is a flitch?

I came across this while searching a link to Scott's thread about his first 'finished' project. It's mentioned almost continuously on the Hearne Hardwoods site, here. I wondering if it's cutting a log and keeping the planks in order of how they came off the log.

In short, Veneer is made by either peeling a layer off a log of wood, or by taking thin vertical cross-sections of a log known as Flitches. Peeled veneers hardly ever look like rift or quartersawn boards, however, flitches tend to look more like quartersawn or riftsawn boards.

In general terms, a flitch refers to a longitudinal face panel of wood. If taken as a back to back piece they are referred to "bookmatched", and if they are done in an order they are called "sequenced". If they are done in a series, they are referred to as "numbered", and marked as such.

An obvious use of "flitches" can be seen on hardwood plywoods that have a "sliced face" veneer, which would be longitudinal panels of "flitches" to make up the 4' width. Rotary cut plywood veneer faces can be one piece.

The term can apply to veneer, or lumber.

I think I remember something about it being 1/2 of a log when I visited Webb veneer company in Indiana.

I used to work for an office furniture manufacturer that included high-end wood furniture. One of their "features" was that they would build all of the furniture for a given office from the same flitch in order to provide better color and grain matching.

My understanding was a flitch was a complete section of a log cut into veneers. In a box in my shed I have several flitches of walnut and oak veneers.
