I Need To Cover Some Threaded Rod

It is 1/2" in dia. The cover needs to be white. I originally planned on using PVC but the clearance wasn't there to put that over before I installed the rod. Now whatever cover I use has to be split. I think that is ok - you will only ever see this by looking up so I can put the split at the top. If I split the PVC, will it crack if I spread it enough to get it over the rod?

i would say if you must use PVCm then use PVC sched 20 the really thin stuff, - but in 1/2" PVC the hole ID will be close to an inch or maybe 7/8ths it will rattle a lot.

What I would suggest as an alternate is to look at the rubber or plastic hose selection see if you can't find a flexible hose with closer to a half inch ID in white and split that. The rod should be stiff so a flex hose is not an issue.

In the shower department at HD, you'll find some thin (1/32 or 1/16) plastic tubing that is split along its length. Used to wrap shower rods for those who want white instead of chrome or whatever.

            David,
Try http://www.mcmaster.com/, they usually have rubber and plastic tubing in stock, that will have 1/2" ID measure and may be in white. If the fit is too tight, try soaking the tubing in hot water for a while, or lubing (silicone only) the rod prior to putting on the tubing.

I found something. It is sold as a condensation line for HVAC. I am guessing it is thin wall PVC. Easy enough to split with a utility knife and it went right over the rod no problem.
