Is my mounting secure enough?

I built a 28"w x 30"h x 10" d cab with a 1/4" back. At the top and the bottom of the cab, on the back I glued and screwed a 1x3. On the wall I have mounted a 1x4 at corresponding heights to the 1x3s in the cab. These outer ones are screwed into studs at their extreme ends, 32" apart. I have planned to run two, 2.5" screws through the midline of the interior 1x's into the outer ones and into the unused stud in the center, between the other two studs. I will also secure two screws on each end of the interior 1x's and into the outer ones. I hope all of this makes sense. If only I could get a handle on the Sketch-It program - grrr.

Sounds like you could store an anvil collection in that cabinet!

French cleats would be perfect for your situation.

I'm guessing you did this because the cabinet won't reach both outer studs. If the wall pieces are screwed in good, and the corresponding matches on the back of the cabinet are fastened good, you should be good to go.

What did you glue the cabinet pieces to exactly? And are these utility (shop type) cabinets? This thread may be of some help.

that shoud be quite strong.
Things fall over because the center of gravity moves outside the base.
If you have a cabinet this can only happen if the feet or base are placed far inside the outer walls of the cabinet, or if there are heavily loaded drawers or very heavy doors (say, with storage in the back of the doors) which can open way out, or if someone, adult, child hangs on the front of the cabinet.
As long as these are not violated it takes very little retaining force to keep it from falling over.

From your description, it sounds to me like the weakest link might be the 1/4" back. How is it attached to the cabinet? I'm assuming you screwed through the back and into the 1 x 3? If that attachment is not strong, then can you secure the 1 x 3 to the sides/top of the carcase?

It sounds plenty strong to me. You could probably hang from that cabinet after it is installed.

Yep, won't reach. The 1 x's on the wall are set in with 1.75" screws.

What did you glue the cabinet pieces to exactly? And are these utility (shop type) cabinets? This thread may be of some help.

Unfortunately, the back is just set into a rabbet but it's glued and stapled in place. OTOH, the interior 1 x's are screwed and glued to the bottom, sides and back. I'm assuming you screwed through the back and into the 1 x 3? If that attachment is not strong, then can you secure the 1 x 3 to the sides/top of the carcase? Done.

Why is it that this great idea came to me **after** the thing was glued, screwed and stapled. Oh yea, lousy planning!!

You never said what you're putting in there, but my kitchen cabinets are hung by just a few small screws. Sounds like you've got twice as many screws as any kitchen cabinet has, and likely better placed. Unless you're planning to put a a few hundred pounds up there, should be good.
