How do I prevent rounding edges during sanding?

I plan on building some simple, gravity wine bottle holders for Christmas gifts and I want to sand the surfaces to a very smooth finish. What is the best way to keep the edges at a sharp 90-degree angle during the sanding process?
As always, thanks for the help.

Sandwich the piece you're sanding between two other similarly sized pieces.

Glue the sandpaper to a flat surface. Use a temporary fence to keep the wood at 90 degrees to the sandpaper and move the wood over the sandpaper. The fence could just be a straight board clamped the the same board the sandpaper is glued to.

You might also consider using a good, sharp hand plane instead of sanding, although it may take a little practice if you have not done it before.

          stationary belt sander.

The follow with a good ROS disk sander with a fine disk and a fairly firm disk backing.

If you're doing it by hand then use a fairly rigid sanding block, home-made of store bought.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.
