    Baltic Birch for exterior use

In my other thread about wood suppliers I should have re done the title to better reflect what I was asking about.

I'm thinking to use baltic birch for some bird houses/feeders. Has anyone used it in a outdoor situation?

Well my thinking was that a generous enough finish would overcome the glue issue.

I didnt really want to have to go to the expense of marine ply. The exterior ply I've had from the box stores always seems to have a void in the most annoying of places.

As noted BB is not made with a waterproof glue. However, I think your line of thought is correct in that a couple thick coats of Spar Urethane would protect against delamination. My logic is that the majority of exterior wooden doors, house trim, door and window jambs are untreated woods of varying species that are finished with exterior paint or urethane.

Other options would be using HDO or MDO. I don't know how they compare in price to Marine Grade Plywood.

Baltic birch plywood is available with both exterior (Type I) and interior (Type II) glues, but you have to know which you're getting. I'm virtually certain that most of what is sold by the usual woodworking vendors will be Type II.

I've heard that the material referred to as Finnish birch all has exterior glue. I don't know whether that's strictly true, but I do know that Woodcraft says the Finnish birch plywood that they sell has exterior glue.

Isn't there a "Finnish birch" or some such that uses exterior glue?

ahh....all I need now is to find a place that sells it without it costing some rediculous amount.
