For my 2nd wood project using my new $99 Ryoki tablesaw I decided to rebuild my kids cracked and broken wood bunkbed. The support beams were cracked in half which looked to be made of 2 x 4's so I thought that would be an easy and cheap fix. Bought some 2x4's at Lowes for $2 each and started to sand them with an orbital sander using 50grit paper. Boy that was crazy tough. I went through alot of 50 grit paper just to strip the outsides to bare wood. Then again with 100 grit paper to smooth it out then again with 150 grit. It took forever. Even then the planks did not look like fine furniture. I ended up staining with GOlden Oak stain then 2 coats of Poly. Would I have had an easier time doing all this with a belt sander?
Sanding 2 x 4's ouch!

How funny. I go and buy a cheapo $99 table saw thinking I can make all these neat things to only find out I need alot more! From reading this and woodworkers forum I guess I need to buy a planner for $400, new table saw for under $500, Router for under $200. on and on. I did buy several pipe and bar clamps allready
Your all a bad influence! Thanks for the feedback.Comment

sanding 2x4's
Might have been better off to start with some good lumber instead of
those $2 each 2x4's...probably just some cheap southern pine...not too
good for finished furniture if you know waht I mean here....eezlockComment

Yeah, your choices are to deal with lumber that is more expensive because it's been surfaced, or buy the tools required to surface lumber. (jointer and planer, a planer alone won't do it)
Eventually we all buy jointers and planers because even pre-surfaced lumber isn't perfect by the time we get to do our project, and a jointer and planer together can generate straight flat square stock.Keith Z. Leonard

They sell them cheap at HF for $199...
If one was to spend the least amount of money for a 12"+ planner and a joiner which models would be the best to look at for the money? Hopefully around $200. I suppose intake and output trays are not nessecary.Comment

At $200 you're going to be into jointers and planers that are lacking a few good features.
Have you considered just using your saw to rip 1/16th or 1/32nd off the edges of the 2x4 and then sanding?
Assuming your saw is OK you should get a pretty clean cut.
I don't know how OK the $99 Ryobi is...

You don't have to buy brand new tools. Look at Craigslist.com, Ebay, here, your local newspaper, etc. for used tools. Plus there's Harbor Freight that can have some some decent tools for decent prices, and some junk. And there's always the rental option.
Just keep an eye out for good deals and keep telling your wife that they are needed.Gil
