I use tin snips, I suppose a cutting wheel on a grinder or a dremel would be more refined, and probably cleaner. Just make the cut to line up in a 'gap' where the hinge pin would be visible.

I think a Dremel tool was the greatest thing invented in times like this. You put in a metal cutoff blade, hold it steady, two halves. Bill

I have cut both brass as well as stainless steel piano hinges with a hacksaw!

At last, something I know something about- hacksaw, 32 tooth blade, preferably in a miter box to keep the cut square. Fine file and polish the cut end.

I've always used a fine tooth hacksaw to cut it, and a quick trip to the grinding wheel to clean up the edges.

Okay, so here is what I believe the consensus is for the order of operations

                        1. place piano hinge folded flat with the pin towards the top in a non-marring vise

                        2. carefully cut hinge to length

                        3. clean, file and polish the cut edge

                        4. go have a cold adult beverage

                        sound about right?
