Having fun working on the #5 (Preview)

Well if you saw the pictures of the #5 plane I bought you would remember that the handle is broken and the knob is in pretty rough shape at the base of it. I could have bought replacement ones but I decided that it would be more entertaining to attempt and make my own from scratch.

Now I could have made them out of Rosewood but since I am rather allergic to any type of Rosewood I decided to use something different. I could have used Beech which is used a lot today for this purpose but I decided to do something different. I have a nice piece of Canary Wood that is 2”X8”X8” so that is what I used. Now Canary is a dense hardwood that falls between Rosewood and Beech in density so I think it will work just fine.

So first I turned a new knob complete with the proper size holes and countersinks and then I carved a new handle. I must admit I deviated from the original but those that have know me for awhile here could have already guessed that. I made the pieces a bit more to my hand instead of the one size fits all original design. I enlarged the handle some in width and carved it till it felt good to me in my hand. I did however keep the same height as it will be important when I reassemble the plane. Here is a picture of the two pieces with just Mineral Spirits on them.

I have about 11 hours into these so it would have been a lot cheaper in time to have bought them but not near as much fun!

Great looking tote and knob, George. You have to set up a quick jig to drill the hole for the bolt so the angle is right.

I am thinking of making my own of Mesquite for a couple of the users.

Yeah, I was gonna say, isn't there a tricky hole thru the middle of the tote? How do you do that?

NICE work there KWG. How about another one of your (in)famous tutorials? I need to make a set myself..

well, it would be easy if you drilled the hole before sculpting the wood.
afterwards, well, you need a jig.

Oh sure Loring, leave it too an engineer to try and take the challenge out of everything!
I had considered drilling the hole first but decided not to incase I messed up with the carving and had to adjust things one way or another since this was my first one.

Bill, I am taking pictures of the complete restore and they included yesterday so I will put the link up when I get it all together.

Ken, in my experience drilling the tote is tricky to say the least No matter what the hole will angle out at the bottom. Steve Knight recently reported success using a long endmill on his milling machine. I had my best results drilling halfway from one side then flipping and drilling the other half. I used a rotary table on the drill press to get an exact 180 degree flip.

Ok I have to tell you guys, ya’ll need to listen to Pappy! He is one smart one he is. I just finished drilling the hole through the handle and I built the jig him and I discussed on the phone and the hole is just about perfect! It may be off a 32nd of an inch as it exits the bottom of the handle.

                THANKS DON!
