what kind of wood is this??

I was pretty sure that i had red oak until i cut into it. I need to take a flashlight with me to the sawmill, it is way too dark where they keep this stuff.

When i planed a face it was all too obvious that i had a completely different animal. I have 2 woods in mind but i dont want to steer anybody if they know what it is. I really have no idea and would like to know.

    Thank you in advance,

    Kevin

it's always hard to tell for sure from pictures but my first thought was maple, esp. from the last two pics showing the other side.

well, I paid $3.20 a BF for 8/4. which isn't a bad price for dry 8/4 oak, but when i compared it to some samples in a book i had, i figured it was either maple or cherry. Never having worked with either I was unsure at best.

            Thanks for your expertise.

Looks to me like cherry. Currently working with some and it looks like a match with yours. If you can pick some more up at that price it is a great deal. Cherry down here in SA can run from the high 4's to around $5.50 per board ft. (rough). Also, if your blades burns it easily it is definitely cherry.

It could also be birch. If it is maple it should be quite heavy, if it is birch it would be a bit lighter.

it is heavy, its also hard. A thumbnail test reveals about the same hardness as the red oak sitting next to it.

Either way, it seems like a deal and im going to pick up some "real" red oak tonight and keep my mouth shut. after this project is done i'll figure out what to build out of it.

                      wood

I thought cherry right away when I saw the pics but most people are saying hard maple. When you cut it, it should tell you right away by the smell. Cherry has a distinct smell to it when being machined.
