We used to teach the auto shop students to clean the battery with a bacon soda water mixture then slowly rinse it off with water, dry it. We even cleaned the battery tray that the battery sat on with this mixture. Lightly coat the battery with automatic transmission oil, clean the poles with the pole cleaning tool and the connectors. Tighten the terminals on and coat it with the auto transmission oil. Those felt rings, the red and green ones you put on the battery poles are just soaked in transmission oil to keep it from corroding. That was the lesson for our 1st. year auto students on battery maintenance. Yes from time to time I had to teach auto shop too.
