    While we're at it ...

A couple of weeks ago we looked at having the carpet in the family room cleaned and because of the nail polish, craft paint, spilled food from countless teenagers, flood two years ago etc. we were advised to just replace it.

Well then, "while we're at it"

We should take out the old built in book cases that had water damage.
There's some mold on the sheetrock behind those bookcases.
The chimney goes right up through where we want the new kitchen upstairs
The walls on either side of where the chimney was were offset by 5" so one must come down or that will look stupid.
The entrance from the back door is a bit cramped can we open that space up a bit?
We should move the bow flex and treadmill to the laundry room and move the laundry to the utility room
We'll have to break up some concrete for the laundry drain
That basement shower has been leaking a while.
Can you add wiring for the TV to the other side of the family room so we don't get glare from the windows?
Since most of the sheetrock is off that exterior wall, we should take it all down and do the spray foam insulation.
We may as well finish the ceiling drywall in your office since we're making a mess anyway and I only want to clean up drywall dust once.
The closet in the mud room could be bigger
There's plumbing and a gas line in that wall? That'll have to move.
You still need to get this done by June 30th because family will be here for the 4th!

And this is where I called time out!
By the way, if you have time, the dishwasher stops halfway through the cycle and flashes an error code. We should probably just redo the kitchen and get matching appliances; I called a kitchen designer.

I'm glad to be back at work in Battle Creek so I can get some rest!

EVERY SINGLE ONE of my projects ends up that way! It's usually my idea, though.

My wife's favorite saying..."While you're at it". Actually it has its merits if the list would make each segment easier/cheaper. I will say that this home will be the last fixer-upper we will ever buy. There is no end. Once your list is mostly complete, its time to start over.

My mom was good at this, but my aunt was the best. From them, I learned to make a list and any "while your at it" add-on projects - would go to the bottom of the list . . . or I would scrap the current project totally and go with the new one.

LOML still forgets this on occasion, but retribution comes when I don't complete the project on the promised time. "Well, YOU didn't let me finish before making me starting a new project" I would reply.

For me, I do ONE project at a time unless the same tools were involved for both.

I know where you're coming from. My wife usually adds, "How long will it take?" Those five words give me more frustration than anything. Half the stuff on the To Do list are things I know how to do, but never actually done before. I usually have a general idea how long it should take, but my wife likes the shortest amount of time answer the best. Then she gets frustrated if it takes longer.

Twistol should have just cleaned the capet or put in some lower wattage lights so you can't see how bad the carpet really is.

yeah - "while we're at it" once ran up a $500 timing belt replacement - up to a full $1500 90,000 mile maintenance package (and that was with discounts)
