If that is a rat, I wouldn't take him anywhere except to a barrel of water. Hopefully I will catch a couple mice in the next day or two.

Squirrels leave an imprint on the area where they nest. Squirrels will continue to try to make a home whereever you found him until you seal the entrances in a manner they cannot overcome. Chicken wire and aluminum flashing work well.

They are also territorial and your squirrel will not be welcome by the natives in his new home. I know in my area it is illegal to relocate trapped squirrels, they have to be euthanized.

It's a flying squirrel. I have a pro coming out on Monday to help me figure out where they're getting in and seal it up for good... I hope.

I'm not going to relocate him permanently. I'm going to take him far far away (near my in-laws' house  ) and let him get some exercise in vast wooded area. After a while I'll call him back to his cage and bring him back home. That's the plan anyway...

can you euthanize them with a .177 pellet?
you can even spare them the trauma of the cage.

I have a hard time killing any tetrapod unless it's about to kill me first. (Or unless I'm really hungry. )

I'll let the pro do the dirty work on Monday. But at least now we have a positive ID and he knows what he's dealing with.

Well it is too late. You have contracted squirrel flu. Deadly within weeks.
