    Does Anyone Like Doing Drywall?

I'm still in the process of building a studio/workshop for LOML (or SWIMU --She Who I Must Obey, depending on my mood). Right now I'm in the drywall phase.
I have done a lot of drywall hanging a mudding in my life and I hated every minute of it. I think it sort of a Purgatory on Earth thing. Also, I cannot seem to horse around sheets of drywall like I used to -- part of the aging process. Is there anyone in this world that enjoys this sort of thing?

I like it, or at least I don't mind it. I finally learned on my most recent job that using every last scrap at the expense of making the taping harder isn't worth it.

Relative to a root canal, sure.

Luckily, I've been blessed by a niece who was considerate enough to marry a professional taper.

Don't mind it too much. I don't try to rush it any more. I spend all the time I need to get the rock on the wall with even joints and the smallest possible gaps around boxes and other protrusions. By the time I'm ready for the tape and mud, it goes pretty fast. And it is pretty mindless so I can enjoy listening to a game on the radio (for example) while I work.

I also use hot mud on the first coat to speed things up A LOT.

There was a time that I didn't mind hanging it, but like you it's now too much work for the results. The taping and spackling, or mudding, I still enjoy. I am of the school that never sands the spackle and uses many coats to get a smooth finish. A scraper for gobs and a damp sponge when needed to feather. If you mix your own quick set compound it takes very little longer to do many coats and the lack of dust cleanup actually makes the job go quicker for me. With my wrist problems I now have to wear a wrist brace to handle the knives and that does make the finessing a bit harder to do. If it helps think of it as icing a cake, and if you're lucky SWNB (she who knows better) is making one in the kitchen for when your done.

          Bill,

I don't mind the actual hanging. But I hate the mudding taping and sanding. I might actually like dealing with fiberglass insulation better than drywall work. At least the insulation is done when it's done, there aren't a bunch of miserable steps.

once you know which compound to use for which stage fo the mudding process, it's not so bad. hanging is the part of the job that determines how hard or easy the mudding is.

I don't mind hanging it, but I don't enjoy finishing it, at all. I can do finishing, but I'm not that good at it, so it takes me quite a while to get good results.

I actually really enjoy doing it. I look at it from a philosophical point of view. This is where you're usually over the hump on a project. The framing, plumbing and electrical are all done and once it's done, you just have the easy stuff left and unless you're putting in tile, none of it is all that messy.

Don't mind hanging it but it's the taping, mudding and sanding I could do without. Also doing corners sucks.

I like hanging it on the walls, the ceiling is a different matter. We have a total to the studs kitchen remodel scheduled for this next July, and I plan on hanging the drywall, saving (if possible) the ceiling drywall, and hiring out the mud and tape.
