    You won't be sorry if you just remove the new piece, put in the right amount of shims. The BORG has paper shims about 1/16" in thickness in the drywall area of the store. They are simply stapled in place. Cost about $7 for a whole bunch. We just completed the drywall in our new 3000 sq ft home and used these where studs were not even. Worked great and the drywall looks great, our first time. Using mud for more that about 1/8" will present other problems later, me thinks. Just my opinion.

      Everyone keeps talking about shimming the low drywall, but my first thought is that what you have is a tapered factory edge butted up to a cut joint, causing the uneven situation. Just tape and taper out the mud about 6" on either side of the joint.
