Do you need to blast/cut a trench to a certain depth to avoid freezing or do they do things different out there (insulated pipes, etc.)?

Normally (okay, in the half dozen houses I've seen) around here the water and gas pipes will be in place before/at the time the foundation is installed (I know yours was going into solid rock, so not quite the same...) and the basement walls are built.

If you have watched or listened to the news lately, you can see we do a lot of things differently (not necessarily better) here in Kalifornia. But as far as the water pipe goes, we have to bury it 12 inches deep unless a vehicle can run over the area then its 18 inches deep. Due to the 6000 ft altitude the local water guru is suggesting 24 inches as winter temperatures can reach down to 5 degrees in the winter for short periods. Not sure how we will accomplish that just yet but it won't be with a pick a shovel. Gotta run the line over 100 ft.
