Chiming in a bit late perhaps, but I just went thru the countertop price shock experience.
One avenue I would probably have went if my wife weren't so picky was www.solidsurface.com buying my own solid surface slabs and machining them.
Although I haven't done it yet, I think we are going to end up with laminate counters
I spent a fair amount of time and brainpower searching for a cost effective (like less then 40 dollars a sf) solid surface or stone solution and it just dosent seem to be in the cards
