Shut off gas pilot on heater in summer?

Do y'all shut off the pilot light on your gas heater in the summer? I don't know
how much gas it uses up when it's on, but it doesn't seem like I would be
hurting anything by shutting it off until winter rolls around.

    Thoughts?

I was told that doing this risked rust from humidity etc. and it wouldn't save much $$$ besides. Don't know if that's true .....

      pilot light

I was told that by leaving them burn will keep insects from building nest in them and plugging them. I cannot think that it would use much gas.

i have two heaters and two A/Cs. The AC are a 3 ton and a 5 ton
I have had years where I remembered to turn if off and some years not.
I think it make about $15 a month difference for both if i shut them off.

I really should since the no-heat months in Houston are probably March- December
OTOH I hate lighting the pilots in the winter.

We have 2 propane freestanding stoves and we turn them off during the summer. Just don't like wasting propane. It's easy to light them back up so no big deal.

In summer on my main house system that is gas feed.. I leave it on to avoid the moisture that can build from the cool of the AC above the gas burner as has been suggested here and by several in the business.

But on my separate shop gas space heater (around 38,000 BTU) I turn off the pilot and slip a cotton canvas cover I sewed to fit the profile over it. Then put a bungy strap tightly around the base to keep dust and moisture out. That has worked fine for around 6 years since I put the space heater in the shop to replace a kerosene heater.
