Thinking out loud on a bathroom remodel

We don't like the layout of our master bath. The big tub never gets used
and the shower is even small for one person. The plan is to remove the tub
and convert it into a glass and tile enclosed shower. I don't see too much
    problem here.

We want to move the toilet to where the shower is. Where the toilet was
will become a small closet or something.

A few questions. Are the drains for toilets and showers compatible in size?
What do I do with the old drain hole for the toilet now that there is no
    sewer gas trap?

    Thanks, Paul

toilet = 3" abs (or cast iron), shower = 2". If your doing it yourself I hope you have alot of room. When I did mine I only had 2 feet from subfloor to ground (not including having to get around all of the water and sewer lines). Make sure you're venting properly. I got a headache trying to figure out a configuration that would work and still fit under the subfloor.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.

      Paul,

For the hole in the subfloor the right way to fix it is to cut the subfloor back to the stud on each side and put a new piece in. I assume you are putting a new floor down in the bathroom. I suppose you could also scab a piece on from the bottom then cut a piece to fit in the hole.

As was said, you will have to replumb the existing shower drain from 2" up to 3" pipe for the toilet. You will probably also have to relocate the drain for the tub when you install the new shower there.

Have fun! I invented some new swear words last weekend when I was doing some plumbing.

I did a similar thing in one of our guest baths. Not sure what your floor is but here in AZ its all concrete slab - a real PITA. I did most of the work including ripping out the bath and converting to a large shower but I had a plumber come in and move the sewer pipes for the toilet. That was the wisest and best few hundred bucks I spent on the project.

I agree that bathtubs are a waste of space. My man cave has a large shower across from the sauna. Have you considered installing a sauna in place of the bathtub?

Close friends of my parents lived in a mobile home (trailer house in those days) on the back of our property. Floyd was a plumber and tended to 'drink a bit'. After I bought my house and did some plumbing repairs, I had a thourough understanding of why! His language could be a little salty at times, too.

I thought toilet flange was 4" and shower drain was 2". Guess I am rusty at that... Been a long time since I have had to think about it...
