We had a Windtunnel (top model a few years back) and when it failed (actually fixed it a few times but got sick of it) replaced it with a Dyson. The Dyson beats the Windtunnel hands down. And it is not messy at all to empty.
When you have several pets the cost of vacuum bags will be an issue.
BTW AFAIK the only difference betwen the pet Dyson and the model below is the upholstery brush, filters etc. are the same. We have leather, so we saved a few bugs and bought the model below.
We also recently got one of the new Roomba models and love it. But it only lived for 3 weeks, waiting for a replacement now.Comment

I actually have a Hoover model called the "Fusion" that is pretty tough.I is a Dison knock-off. Handles pet hair like a champ. It is not perfect as the hose is a bit short and it is no force on bare floors but it was only about $135.spellling champion Lexington region 1982Comment

Consmer Reports quick picks for canisters.
PM me if you want more from the CR pages.
Best canisters for most tasks:
• Hoover WindTunnel Bagless S3765-040 , $180
• Kenmore (Sears) Progressive 27514 , $300, CR Best Buy
The Kenmore performs similarly to its top-rated brand mate for far less. Choose the Hoover if price outranks handling and pet-hair pickup. Also consider the Electrolux Oxygen3 Ultra EL7020A for its superb carpet cleaning and the Electrolux Oxygen EL6988A for its fine handling and superb pet-hair performance.

My ultimate answer to floor cleaning issues was ripping out carpet and vinyl in the house and replacing with hardwood!Comment

Bought a new vacuum about a year ago. Did my research at CR, Epinions, Amazon, etc. and once I'd settled on a model, found it was cheapest at WalMart.
Mine is an upright, so I don't have suggestions for a canister, other than to do research at the same basic places.Comment

I lost this thread. Sorry I posted in the wrong place. I was hoping for insight on where to find "deals" on such an item. I'm of the opinion that us tool guys have it good in that regard with our own fourm on where to get the best deals on them. Vacuums I guess are not tools.
Anyway, I went to Sears this morning and got an, on sale at $279, white Progressive. It is a slight upgrade to the one here on CR with a soft britle dust brush and a telescoping extension for $20 more. They are all on sale today.
Had not vacuumed the house since my original post and my old Hoover died that day
This new Vacuum is nice and so far very good. I'm liking the canister so far. The Hoover was an upright windtunnel. Will probably get another upright eventually just to have. Thanks to all for the insight.
