    Replacing fascia boards

I am going to be replacing dryrotted 2X10 fascia boards on my house. The 2 boards on the gable end are 21' long each. Can I use shorter (10'-12') length boards and butt them together with a scarf joint and caulk the seams or should I replace them with 21' boards.

    Thanks for any help,
    Tony

In this part of the country, we couldn't afford a 2 X 10 X 21' even if We could find them. I covered mine with vinyl. But You can use shorter stock. Bill

If you dont mind seeing a joint then use the method you mentioned. Are you replacing it with wood or PVC?

My choice would be PVC, and never have to paint them.

You can use shorter boards, just make sure you have the seams fall on a rafter tail.

Thanks for the help guys. I will be using Douglas Fir to match what already is on the house. I'm glad I can use 10' and 12' boards. I can at least get that length home in my truck without too much trouble.

            Thanks again

When you put them up, install the part of the joint that goes under/behind last. With the first piece nailed on, have a helper push the second piece in to get the joint as tight as possible.
