How to make a hole in a Plaster wall.

I bought a house last June and need to put up a Medicine Cabinet in the bathroom.

The walls are Plaster, over Lath, REAL Plaster, not Wallboard (house was built in the '40s).

How do I drill a hole in the wall without chipping the darn plaster???

I'll use Toggle Bolts to hang the Cabinet, once I have the holes in the wall.

If your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat all problems as if they were nails.

Use a flat blade screwdriver, gently twist it into the plaster down to the lath and then drill thru the wood.

I've had great success with cheapo masonary bits- silver/chrome in color (not to be confused with similiar looking hammerdrill bits- grey on color). No chipping whatsoever.

Use masking tape to reduce chip out. Tape the area and drill and saw through the tape.

I don't mind hearing it, but keep it to yourself if it stinks.
