HD cull bin?

Thanks for all the responses...There are times when I just need a so-so piece of wood and it hurts to shell out BORG prices. Looks like it may be time to start dumpster diving. Is a furniture store a good place to start?

Regarding dumpster diving -- are there legal issues with driving to a construction site and digging through the dumpster? Is a dumpster considered "free to take"?

I'd normally think so, but I've heard of people getting prosecuted for dumpster-diving behind a Wal-mart (where they often throw out overstock, etc.)

I think dumpster diving is best accomplished by first asking permission... My co-worker once asked at a construction site for the scrap 2x4s (for firewood) - next thing you know, there was a truck pulling up to his house and filling up his driveway...

The HD here very often has remnants from sheet goods in it. The only times I’ve bought full sheet of anything is when I’ve needed something longer than the typical bits (very often right around 2‘x4‘) left in the bin.

Isn't it a bad idea to burn softwood? I thought it was a quick ticket to a chimney fire and lots of popping which could be a fire hazard inside as well...

Speaking of culling BORG lumber, HD has 3x5x8' landscape timbers on sale for 1.97. I hope that they have enough on hand for me to find 89 straight ones and 1 with a 36" radius.

Was at the HD today and found the cull bin...there wasn't much in it today, and no price on any of the color codes. But it's good to know it's there, just in case.

Found the Cull bin at my local HD. Was maybe good for firewood (but pricey for that). Located at the back of the store at the end of the construction lumber. Prices were like 1-4 bucks depending on color painted. Nothing was in the 3 or 4 dollar slot, so I'll have to check back.

When HD did have a cull bin, most, if not all, the pieces were not sprayed with the color code. I was tempted once or twice to grab the can under the saw and code my own. One time I did chase down an employee to try to get a priceon a nice looking piece of pine. I din't want to pay $4 for a 3 foot piece.

The Home Depot in Chapel Hill (Akron) had 4 carts LOADED with cull lumber. I've never seen 1 in there before. It was mostly pressure treated stuff and a bit of sheet good cut offs. Weren't priced, they all had signs "ask an associate"

I finished the entire ceiling of my shop with tongue and groove pine wainscoting. All the stock came from the cull bin. A few sections of it wouldn't have been appropriate for home remodeling (dinged edges, loose knots), but it looks very nice as a rustic ceiling treatment. I paid either $0.51 or $1.01 for each 4' piece.

I just kept buying a board or two at a time whenever I noticed it, and within about six months I had nearly enough to do the job. In the time it took me to use up what I had accumulated, I found enough additional cull bin stock to finish the job.

I have scored at the cull bin over time. I have also got some good deals finding some damaged product(broken corner, dented, small split)They will sel it to you at a discount. They are glad to get it out of stock. I usually get it for about 1/2. I look at the oak plywood stack every time I visit the store.
