Thin panel for a clock ?

I saw this on the news while in Memphis and just found a picture of it. It is a derailed freight train carrying lumber near Los Angeles.
When a ship carrying timber (lumber to those over 'The Pond') sank off the SW tip of England (where I've just been BTW) last year, a lot of the cargo was washed ashore. Very little remained after the villagers scavenged it. I saw a lot of new wooden workshops down there.

31 cars left a switching yard because someone forgot to set a brake. got going up to 90 mph. Union Pacific derailed it without warning anyone. two houses crushed, no one killed fortunately.

I'm just about to finish up a keepsake mantle clock out of walnut. I had some walnut veneer to use for the back panel but I think the missus used it to practice her scrolling. Anyway, I have some solid stock that I though about milling down to the 1/4 but wasn't sure whether or not stock that thin wouldn't wind up creating a problem. It's no big deal as I can get some more veneer but I have to think folks have been making thin panels out of solid wood a lot longer than we've had ply. The panel will only be screwed in, not glued so what do you guys think?

edit: Forgot to mention that the panel is 8X10 and will be a glue up.

Resaw a 4"x10" piece on the bandsaw for a nice David Marksish bookmatch panel. Go a little thick, then run thru the planer, then hit it with a cabinet scraper. Should look great!

Thanks Steve. Appreciate the nudge, I never thought about the bookmatch panel.
