red oak prices- Ahh the power of asking around

well, ive spent my fair share of time on the phone calling all the sawmills and lumber dealers in my area and have come to the conclusion that even rough red oak is expensive enough, but after all that calling i came back to this place its only about 20 minutes away, and he was by far the most helpful,

now for the question: is his prices fair? this will be my first time for rough lumber,

        TIA

I've seen cheaper and I've seen higher. If the lumber is of good quality it looks to be a fair deal.

Red Oak rough cut at the mill can be had easily around here for less than $1 bd ft. Better grades can go as high as $1.50.
There was recently in the classified's 750 bd. ft. of real nice air dried for $0.55, but I missed it by a couple of hours.
For your area those prices seem to be reasonable, if the stock is nice.

Price will vary with geographic location. Those prices aren't bad, but aren't great either. If you're getting good service and good lumber there's more to be considered than just price. In time he might cut you some slack.

My supplier offers me deals on shorter boards....how often do you need full length? It's been about two years since I went and got any rough RO, but it was $2.35 bd/ft for full length, and $1.65 for < 5' lengths. Might be worth asking about...

Seems reasonable to me, is comparable to prices here in Iowa.
As was stated above if quality is good.
If he is local and you can save shipping, buying local could be saving quite a lot.

well i talked to my supervisor at work about rough lumber and he told me of a place only about 3 miles from there that has rough red oak, not graded mind you, but dry, for around $1.50 BF, you pick what you want, and he'll help you load it, lol

He's going with me so i have a clue as to what im looking at, sounds like a good deal, but we shall see,

That's about the same prices here in the Twin Cities area (from a rough-cut source).

I had to buy a few pieces at the BORG the other day and couldn't believe the outrageous prices they charge. 1" x 8" was something like $4.60 a linear foot. That's almost $7/board foot! Of course it was S4S but I didn't need it to be, just didn't have time to drive an hour or more each way to one of the 'local' rough-cut sources...

We'll I've only bought one "batch" so far but priced around several places. I purchased from Brian at http://logs-to-lumber.com out in Inver Grove Heights. I've also wanted to take a trip down to Northern Hardwoods in Canon Falls (http://www.northernhardwoodinc.com), but it's far enough away that I haven't done it yet. A friend who's into WWing has bought from there and recommended it.

The nice thing about Brian's lumber is he rough-cuts it thick and smooth enough so you can almost get 1" finished lumber out of his 4/4 stock (I got about .95" on my last project, and on my current project got about .85" on most of the pieces).

You guys are so lucky. The best place I've found around here for rough lumber is this one: http://www.highlandhardwoods.com/price_lists/Retail.pdf

If I had any faith in what I would end up with I'd have it shipped up. I've checked on it and even paying shipping I could save on average about 15%. Nothing to scoff at, but I'm not sure I can take the chance. Maybe someday I'll try it with about 100 bdft that could be worked into projects if it isn't the nicer wood I'd pick out in person...
