Hello all, I am looking to buy a thickness planer and after doing some searches on here and the internet I have narrowed it down to 2 choices, the Delta 22-580 or the Dewalt 734. If anyone has pro's or con's to these please let me know. Also, where might I go to purchase the Delta locally if I decide to go that route? Thanks all.

Most people would say you're getting a good planer by choosing either of them. Both of them are very comparable in specs and performance. My recommendation is to shop around and buy whichever is cheaper.
That being said, I have the DeWalt 733 (older version of the 734) and I love it. -
What Terry said, except that I have the 22-580, and love it.
We have a couple-few members in Colorado who may be able to suggest some local vendors. The Woodcraft web site shows a store in Denver, and they sell Delta, but their prices run a little high. Don't know if they have a price-matching policy; if so, around $350 would be the current best price.
(If you don't already know this, it'll make you sick to learn that Lowe's closed out this model a few months ago for $229 ...)LarryComment

I was around for the $229 rush, but it just wasn't the right time for me to get one. to bad because now I am shopping for one after I returned my tp300. It's going to be the Dewalt 734. I noticed the price went down a bit to $359. Not huge savings, but $20 is $20. I've heard nothing but good things about either of them, and I'm simply choosing the dewalt because I have a couple gift cards, and they gave me my tp300 return as store credit.Comment

I've been very happy with the 22-580. The two speed feature is great for heavily figured hardwoods. The dust chute "good" but not great, the blades are a snap to change and are about $26 for a two sided set @ Lowes, and I like some of the thickness setting features.
I'm sure either would be fine. I rarely hear a bad word about either, and I'm sure both get sold alot.Happiness is sort of like wetting your pants....everyone can see it, but only you can feel the warmth.

I have the 22-580, but I'm more of hand-tool guy so I can't necessarily say I have a valid opinion. That said, it does what I would expect it to do.--

Unless you have a prefernence for one or the other, I'd shop for the best deal.

Thanks for all the responses and information everyone. I got the Delta 22-580 over the weekend for $339 at tool king. The new units were actually $20 cheaper than the reconditioned units.Bob D.
