My experience with eastern hemlock is not good. The statement that "it tends to seperate on the anullar growth rings" is a true understatement. This wood is currently used in Maine to make columns and beams, I can't say how or if it is treated to avoid the seperation. I tried turning some and it behaved like an onion - came apart in layers. Having said that the floors of our house in Maine are most likely hemlock. The wood floors are like a rock but the wood has been drying for 130+ years. If it was me I would pick another wood.
Even a blind hog finds an acorn from time to time.
