Any kid big enough to break a coffee table top built of 3/4 plywood is way too big to not know better. I would worry more about the leg attachment than the strength of the top. I would not be concerned to stand on the top of a coffee table made of 3/4 plywood (and I weigh about 200 lbs). I would hessitate to mess with anybody who could break the top by sitting on it.

Thanks Jim. I'm still debating on the leg options. I'd like to go with something stout but then I'd want to use more than just 3/4" for the top just so it doesn't look bad.
