    For you AZ woodworkers........

I've been off line lately 'cause I was busy packing up all my stuff in Pennsylvania and getting it unpacked back here in Arizona. That's right -- after five years -- I"M BACCCCCKKKK!!!! BerniePA with the AZ flag logo, is now BernieBackInAZ!!!

However, I need some help. The lumber guy that I used to deal with to the south of Chandler airport is no longer there. I have checked prices on lumber at Woodworker Source and I think it is called Timber on Southern, and I can't find ANY place with reasonable prices on wood. Of course, Lowes and HD are out of the question.

I have relocated into the San Tan Valley area and my question for you is WHERE in the valley is a good place to get reasonably priced wood. I finally got the last of my boxes unpacked, and it should soon get cool enough in the garage to start some projects, but I just can't locate some place to take my money and leave me enough for a cup of coffee later!! Where do I go?? Where is the best (read Cheapest) place for good wood.

Yeah, it did seem to be much cheaper up there, but the shipping will kill me, and also, I just got all the rust off my tools that accumulated from being there!!!

The guy in Chandler near the airport sold the whole lot to another guy who was still running the place, last i was knew. So, the phone number may not work but you could try going down there and seeing if the new guy is still selling wood. I haven't been there in a few years as I've packed up and moved to NY. But i was there maybe 2-3 years ago and it was under new mgmt.

        Good Luck,
        Bill

I did take a ride down there when I first got back, and there isn't even a toothpick left on the ground where the yard used to be. In fact, I think the family house that was on the property is also gone and a newer home built near its former location.

That's a shame 'cause that was a good place for wood. I got all my stuff from there before I left 5 years ago. I wasn't into turning at that time, but I remember he even had pen and bowl blanks there in various woods.

Thanks for the update anyway, Bill.

Well sorry to hear that. That is too bad. I scored a bunch of pens blanks for $1 back when.

I'm look around for another contact I got while at the fleemarket there. There was one guy who had a woodworking store who sold "exotic" woods and his son had another company that sold wood also.

At least here in NY, I get more free walnut, maple, oak, cedar and others than i can handle.

            Hope you like verde..

Whoa -- you found FREE!!! You can't beat that deal!! Congrats and good woodworking!!!!

Your "hope you like verde.." If you are referring to my location, San Tan Valley is the area east of Queen Creek from about Germann and Ironwood through Johnson Ranch and on to Copper Basin. It cuts a swath about 5-6 miles wide along that path. It was just officially formed last year to positively break it off from Queen Creek. Red tape if you ask me!!!

Bill, if you have free access to wood, you need to read the blog on Wood magazine's forum regarding solar kilns.... wow! What an opportunity!

Where did all the AZ woodworkers go??!! I know some of you are out there -- let me in on your secret location for buying cheap lumber. I promise I am not rich enough to buy all the wood and leave you with none!!!

I hope that you find a good source, and let me know! I plan to start spending most all of my winters there instead of a couple weeks at a time.

Sorry to tell you 3Thumbs, but it seems all our AZ woodworkers are still hiding from the heat and are not even on Bt3Central. Either that or they shop at HD!

I'd hate to have to haul a whole winter's supply down there!

Not only are we lacking in good wood supply here in AZ, but we don't get nearly the good used tool deals as those folks back east do. Timber, WW Source, Woodcraft, and Rockler are the only WW sources around here that I know of. Rockler is a long ways from my house in Power Ranch and Timber seems to require the arm AND the leg for wood. Heck, Rockler and Woodcraft aren't much better on the wood price either. The borgs can be used sometimes, but not reliably. Woodworking seems to be more expensive in general here in AZ.
